| Introduction to Weld Overlay
Procedures
We encompass S.M.A.W., G.M.A.W., F.C.A.W. and
S.A.W. from manual to fully automatic with
registered welding procedures.
- All welding machines that require volt-amp
monitoring will have calibrated gauges
- Air conditioning is used to supply cool, clean
air and remove smoke and fumes from vessel
- All welders are job-tested to procedure as per
A.S.M.E. code
- All overlays shall have boat samples taken
randomly, or a nuclear analyzer will be used to
check chemical analysis
S.M.A.W. Example:
309L electrode used to achieve minimum 18-8
finished overlay with single pass. Beads will be 8
per vertical inch with 3/16" minimum build-up.
Welding supervisor on a continuous basis monitors
voltage and amperage. The overlay is checked for the
right number of beads per inch and overlay thickness
approximately every two hours for each welder.
G.M.A.W. Example:
"Inconel" automatic single pass overlay
in vessel. Power is fed through slip ring device to
rotary table having multiple heads spread
equidistantly. The welding controls are located at
each welding head. The indexing and travel are done
automatically after checking and setting to vessel
diameter. Vertical travel of 48" of overlay is
applied. Then the table is raised as a unit with
post support systems installed under the table at
each lift with centering and clamping to the wall
and starting next 48" of overlay.
Welding is done with dual gas shielding at 8
beads per vertical inch with minimum build-up of
3/16". Each welding head is operated by one man
who monitors voltage, amperage and bead profile.
With a three-man crew, this gives changeover time
for lunch and coffee and supplies wire and checks
gas cylinders without interrupting the welding
operation.

S.A.W. Example:
Geo-Clad 3-1a, powdered alloy core wire with
subarc flux, single pass overlay giving an average
25% chrome and 11% nickel finished overlay. Power is
fed through slip ring device to rotary table that
has multiple welding heads spread equidistantly.
The welding controls are located at each welding
head. The indexing and travel are done automatically
after checking and setting to vessel diameter.
Vertical travel of 48" of overlay is applied.
Then the table is raised as a unit with post support
systems installed under the table at each lift with
centering and clamping to the wall and starting next
48" overlay.
Each welding head is operated by one man who
monitors volts, amps, flux hopper and bead profile.
With a three-man crew, this gives changeover time
for lunch and coffee breaks and supplies wire and
flux to table without interrupting the welding
operation.
